The Importance of Networking in an AI World

The Importance of Networking in an AI World

Artificial intelligence has become part of nearly every stage of today’s job search. Job seekers are using AI to research companies, identify target roles, refine resumes, prepare for interviews, draft outreach messages, and even negotiate salaries. Employers are also embracing technology to help organize applications, streamline workflows, and improve efficiency throughout the hiring process. There’s no question that AI is changing how we search for jobs. But even with all that technology, there’s still something that we can’t overlook: the importance of networking and human connections.

Although the job search may feel impersonal, behind every interview invitation is a recruiter or hiring manager reviewing applications. And behind every offer is a team of people deciding who will solve their problems, fit their culture, and contribute to their organization.

Technology may have made job-search activities more efficient, but relationships still make the process meaningful. At Transition Solutions, we encourage job seekers to embrace AI as a valuable tool while continuing to invest in the aspect that technology will never replace: relationships.

AI Is a Tool, not a Relationship

As a job seeker, you know the power of leveraging AI in your job search. We’ve discussed it in a previous article, in fact. There’s no question that AI can help you to:

  • Research industries and companies.
  • Identify transferable skills.
  • Tailor your resume to a specific position.
  • Prepare for interviews.
  • Draft LinkedIn messages.
  • Practice answering behavioral interview questions.

One area where AI falls short, though, is building trust and credibility. That happens during conversations. And by creating those strong connections, you start to gain access to new opportunities, referrals, and introductions.

The best way to get the most out of AI is to think of it as your job-search assistant. It’s a helper to improve efficiency, but it’s not a replacement for the human side of your job search.

The Hiring Process Is Still Human

One misconception we occasionally hear is that applicant tracking systems or AI decides who gets hired. That simply isn’t how the process works.

Applicant tracking systems (ATS) help employers organize applications and search for candidates who possess the qualifications they’re seeking. AI can assist recruiters with administrative tasks or help summarize information, but neither ATS nor AI makes hiring decisions.

The exception, of course, is when employers use knockout questions to determine whether applicants meet basic requirements, such as work authorization, required certifications, or willingness to travel. Beyond those objective criteria, people review resumes. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Recruiters decide who advances.
  • Hiring managers decide who interviews.
  • Leadership teams decide who receives offers.

Technology supports the hiring process. People drive it.

Visibility Gets You Found; Relationships Build Credibility

One of the biggest advantages of AI is that it helps job seekers become more visible. It makes it easier to be more polished in your branding, from a resume that shares your qualifications to a LinkedIn profile that sparks conversation. AI has helped simplify aspects of the application process and made it easier for job seekers to keep pace.

But visibility is only part of the equation. Credibility is what moves the conversation forward. When you achieve credibility, you’ll see an increase in referrals, recommendations, and even memorability. Technology just can’t mirror the components of a great one-on-one conversation.

Networking Creates Opportunities You Won’t Find Online

Not every opportunity begins with a job posting. Many begin with a conversation. A past colleague may know about an opportunity that’s yet to be posted and shares it with you. Someone you met at a networking event suddenly has a need and remembers having met you. A recruiter who’s connected to you on LinkedIn and has been seeing your posts reaches out to have a chat because of what you’ve shared.

These opportunities don’t happen by accident. They happen because you’ve invested in relationships before you needed them. You’ve been proactive in your sharing and created visibility and credibility among people who are in a position to help.

The thing that most job seekers miss is that networking isn’t about asking for a job. It’s about building community with like-minded professionals who know, like, and trust you—who will think of you when opportunities arise.

The Importance of Networking on LinkedIn

You may think of networking as attending a conference or business mixer, and while those absolutely qualify as networking (more on them in a bit), LinkedIn can be just as powerful. Sometimes, it can be an even better way to network since you can reach nearly anyone no matter where they are.

Build your network by connecting with colleagues, friends, alumni, recruiters, industry leaders, and professionals at target companies. But don’t stop there. Create value with them by liking and commenting on their posts. Share insightful information and a bit about yourself. Celebrate wins and offer support when needed.

LinkedIn isn’t there to help you collect connections or beat the algorithm. It’s there to help you build relationships, demonstrate your expertise, and stay top of mind with your professional network.

Level Up with In-Person Networking

As mentioned previously, attending a conference, trade show, or business luncheon is a great way to get in front of movers and shakers. Events abound at any time of the year, and you can search for them online across professional organizations, Chambers of Commerce, industry events, alumni gatherings, referral groups, and even community gatherings.

When people get together, opportunities abound.

In-person meetings can be a bit out of some people’s comfort zone, so it’s smart to have a plan and a goal for each event. Arm yourself with a smile, a few simple conversation openers, and what you’d like to accomplish, such as meeting five new people or having three meaningful conversations.

Follow up after the event by connecting on LinkedIn or scheduling a call to learn more. And go back. As with LinkedIn, the more visible you are, the faster you’ll develop credibility.

Let AI Help You Network Better

In our AI world, you can actually leverage artificial intelligence to improve your networking efforts. Research where to network in your area or people online you should seek out. Then use AI to help you craft messages such as:

  • Initial outreach messages to say hello.
  • An invitation to an informational interview.
  • Great questions to ask during a networking meeting.
  • Icebreakers and conversation starters

Of course, use AI as your writing partner; don’t outsource the entire project. If it doesn’t sound like you, it won’t be very authentic.

A Simple Weekly Networking Plan

A job search is a lot of work, and it can feel like “one more thing” to add in networking, regardless of whether you understand its importance or not. But remember: Anything you do to help with your job search will pay off.

Here’s a simple, repeatable weekly cadence you can easily adopt:

  • Monday: Reach out to one former colleague.
  • Tuesday: Leave thoughtful comments on five LinkedIn posts.
  • Wednesday: Request one informational interview with someone at a target company.
  • Thursday: Publish a LinkedIn post about your expertise, your job search, or something that helps people get to know you.
  • Friday: Follow up with someone you’ve met recently or attend a networking event.

The goal isn’t simply to do more. It’s to intentionally balance online applications with human connection. And by making a plan for outreach, you’re much more likely to stay focused.

Technology Changes; Relationships Endure

Artificial intelligence will continue to evolve, and new tools will emerge. One thing that won’t change is that people will always be part of the equation. No one at Transition Solutions would suggest that you forego the benefits of incorporating AI—nor would we suggest you skip the people component. Even for our clients, we offer an amazing, AI-integrated CareerDashboard™, but we partner that with ongoing one-on-one support from a dedicated career consultant because we know how important that human touch really is.

We challenge you to balance technology with humanity. Leverage AI yet forge new relationships. With a solid mix of strategies, you’ll see that your results will magnify.
