Staying Motivated in Your Job Search During the Summer

Are you having a hard time staying motivated in your job search this summer?

At Transition Solutions, we have been helping companies and individuals plan for workforce changes and deliver outplacement services for over 30 years. For those of us who live in places like New England, the summer months contain precious moments to enjoy the weather, visit the Cape, go to the beach and more!

If you are job searching, these activities can certainly be a distraction. We share the following advice with our clients to help them keep moving forward with their job search, while also taking advantage of summer fun.

  1. Set goals for yourself. Setting weekly or daily goals for yourself such as making 2 – 3 networking calls, reviewing job sites a certain number of hours each day, applying to 4 – 5 jobs weekly, etc. can help to maintain activity levels through the summer.
  2. Create a job search action plan. If you’re in between jobs, it’s good to create a job search action plan that includes a weekly schedule with activity goals mentioned above, fitness plans and time for personal activities. Measure and monitor your progress to your goals to keep you on track.
  3. Make the most of summer activities. Summer parties and events are great places to network and meet new people. If you are asked about your job search be positive! Remember that you are defined by who you are and what you do, not by your current career transition.  Be prepared to answer where you work and what you do with something like, “I have worked at some great places, most recently ABC company.”
  4. It’s ok to take some time off. Once you decide how much time you want to spend job searching this summer, you should incorporate time off to enjoy the season, family and friends.
  5. Maintain good health. Staying physically fit with exercise, healthy food and good sleep are important to help maintain daily motivation.
  6. Leverage your network. 80 – 90% of people find their next role leveraging their network. Reach out to your past colleagues, friends and family to stay connected and for help learning about opportunities and getting interviews.
  7. Volunteer. In addition to helping out for a cause you care about, you’ll get the chance to polish up your existing skills, learn new ones, and even expand your professional network.
  8. Take a Class. You can take a class for professional development or grow in a personal skill such as gardening. Many local community colleges offer summer classes, in addition to free online courses that help with upskilling. Classes can also be a fun opportunity to meet new people.

Companies are definitely still hiring during the summer, so if you are in between roles and looking for your next job, it will be important to stay motivated and keep moving forward in your job search efforts. Having and monitoring a job search action plan can help keep you on track and allow for time to still enjoy the precious summer months!
