Telling Your Story in 30 Seconds or Less

Are you prepared to tell your story in 30 seconds or less?

At Transition Solutions, we have been helping companies and individuals with workforce changes for 30 years.

As part of job searching efforts, we coach our clients it’s important to have a basic short 30 seconds or less story that tells your unique selling position.

This short story is sometimes referred to as the “elevator pitch” and there are several environments where this message is critical. In general, you have a very short space of time to get across your value. And you need to be focused on making a great impression quickly.

Typically, this message is something you’ll use with people who don’t know you early in a conversation, but it can equally be used with people you know, but who may not know exactly what you do.

Your story should describe your skills as well as your job title and can include the type of industry or companies you’re targeting. End your story with how your skills or experience help companies achieve success or specific types of goal.

Example:

I’m a ____________________ (your job title) and I use my (skills / experience / successes) in ________________ and _____________, and to help companies in the ______________ industry achieve ______________ (specific type of success or goal).

Your immediate words need to give your audience a clear picture of your value and should leave them thinking either that was interesting or how can I learn more?

Once you get the attention of your audience, they may want more specifics, so be prepared to share a bit more detailed information if requested. Keep your responses brief to help your audience stay engaged.
