The Simplest LinkedIn Routine You’ll Actually Stick To
By Transition Solutions / Sarah Blankenship
In Part 1 of this three-part series, we explored Why LinkedIn Matters After 50 (Even If You Hate It).
In Part 2, we called out the shift toward personal storytelling, vacation recaps, and toddler-inspired leadership lessons, and we established that you don’t have to participate in any of that to use LinkedIn effectively.
Now, in Part 3, let’s get to what most people actually want: A routine.
A simple, realistic rhythm you can maintain without turning LinkedIn into another item on your already overloaded to-do list.
Here’s the good news: what works requires far lighter lifting than you think.
1. Your Job Is to “Look Alive” on LinkedIn
That’s it. Not “go viral.” Not “become an influencer.” Just show signs of professional life.
Recruiters don’t need you to post daily monologues. They just need to know you’re active, you’re reachable, and you’re still in the industry.
You can handle all of this in minutes, not hours, and without paying for a course that swears you need to become a LinkedIn power user to get hired.
At Transition Solutions, we help professionals build manageable LinkedIn habits that get results without adding stress to your schedule.
2. Do This 2–3 Times a Week (Total Time: 10 Minutes)
Not daily. Not obsessively. Just a couple of quick touch points each week.
Check your messages and notifications: Reply to anything relevant. This alone shows activity.
Leave one thoughtful comment: Not five. Not ten. Just one. Pick a post from someone in your field or a company you’re targeting. Leave a short, human comment. This makes your name reappear in your network, without any “content creation.”
Add five new connections: Add a handful of new connections. Coworkers, recruiters, or anyone who might be helpful down the road. Quiet, consistent growth wins every time. Simple, sustainable, and actually doable.
Transition Solutions coaches can help advise on which posts to engage with and which connections to prioritize, making your networking efforts more targeted and effective.
3. Do This Once a Month (15 Minutes)
A small monthly tune-up keeps your profile from getting stale and ensures that you’re easily discoverable by recruiters.
Update something small:
- Skills
- Your About section
- Project you’ve completed
- Recent achievements or awards
Even a tiny change pushes your profile back into circulation.
Skim your target companies: Not a deep dive. Just a glance at openings or updates.
That’s it. You’re done until next month.
4. What You Don’t Need to Do
Let’s be blunt, here’s what you do not need to do to land a job on LinkedIn.
You do not need to:
- Post daily
- Share motivational quotes
- Tell stories with a dramatic plot twist
- Comment on every post
- Create a content plan
- Worry about “the algorithm”
- Feel pressured to become a thought leader
None of that is required for getting hired.
5. LinkedIn Tells the Rest of Your Story
Your resume shows two pages of what you’ve done. LinkedIn shows the full picture of who you are professionally, everything you can’t cram into a document without breaking formatting rules or losing your mind.
Recruiters aren’t looking for viral posts or inspirational monologues.
They’re looking for proof that:
- You know your field
- You’re present and easy to contact
- Your profile reflects where you are now, not five jobs ago
And here’s the secret most job seekers overlook: LinkedIn is now built to showcase everything professionals used to stick on a personal website – portfolio pieces, media, certifications, recommendations, work samples, except it’s free. No premium subscription needed. No fancy branding. No high-tech skills required.
And the best part? You can keep this updated in less time than it takes LinkedIn to show you yet another post about “What My Cat Taught Me About Leadership.”
